Trimerus was named by Green (1832) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-u D Emsi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1106].

It was assigned to Homalonotidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Homalonotinae by Thomas (1977) and Congreve and Lieberman (2008).
