Dicanthopyge was named by Palmer (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Sepkoski's reference number: 501]. Its type is Dicanthopyge quadrata.

It was assigned to Trilobita by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aphelaspididae by Jell and Adrain (2003).
