Glossopterum was named by Sharov (1966). Its type is Glossopterum martynovae. It is the type genus of Glossopteridae.
It was assigned to Glosselytridae by Rasnitsyn and Aristov (2013); and to Glossopteridae by Sharov (1966), Novokshonov (1998), Novokshonov (1998) and Pérez-de la Fuente et al. (2022).
