Glossopteridae was named by Sharov (1966). Its type is Glossopterum.

It was synonymized subjectively with Glosselytridae by Rasnitsyn and Aristov (2013).

It was assigned to Jurinida by Novokshonov (1998); and to Glosselytrodea by Sharov (1966) and Pérez-de la Fuente et al. (2022).
