Penarosa was named by Opik (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm uMid Sepkoski's reference number: 16]. It is not extant. Its type is Penarosa retifera.

It was assigned to Trilobita by Sepkoski (2002); and to Nepeidae by Jell and Adrain (2002) and Jago et al. (2004).
