Astrea defrancei was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1850). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Orbicella defrancei by Kühn (1926); it was recombined as Heliastrea defrancei by Edwards and Haime (1857) and Kojumdgieva (1960).
