Taxonomy
Posidonia cretacea was named by Hosius and Von der Marck (1880). It is not extant. Its type locality is Ahrenfeld near Sendenhorst, Nordrhein-Westfalen, which is in a Campanian open shallow subtidal marl in the Ahlen Formation of Germany.
