Dromilites pustulosus was named by Reuss (1845). It is the type species of Polycnemidium.
It was recombined as Polycnemidium pustulosus by Karasawa et al. (2014); it was recombined as Polycnemidium pustulosum by Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2016).
