Taxonomy
Pycnolepas was named by Withers (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith T Mi-m]. Its type is Pollicipes rigidus. It is the type genus of Pycnolepadidae.

It was assigned to Cirripedia by Sepkoski (2002); to Brachylepadidae by Collins (1980), Carriol and Collins (2000), Jagt et al. (2007) and Chan et al. (2021); and to Pycnolepadidae by Gale and Vidovic (2023).
