Taxonomy
Chironomus proterus was named by Melander (1949). Its type specimen is BMNH I.7359, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Florissant (BMNH Collection), which is in a Chadronian lacustrine - large shale in the Florissant Formation of Colorado.
