Smilium was named by Leach (1825) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 346]. It is extant. Its type is Smilium peronii.

It was assigned to Calanticinae by Buckeridge (1983); to Cirripedia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Calanticidae by Jones (2007).
