Sphaerocera was named by Latreille (1805). It is extant. It is the type genus of Sphaeroceridae, Sphaerocerinae.

It was assigned to Sphaeroceridae by Evenhuis (1994); and to Sphaerocerinae by Roháček et al. (2001).
