Hemioon novozelandicum was named by Glaessner (1980). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Swale Stream, which is in an Albian marine siltstone in the Swale Siltstone Formation of New Zealand.
It was recombined as Raninella novozelandicum by van Bakel et al. (2012).
