Caryocaris was named by Salter (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l O u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Caryocaris wrightii. It is the type genus of Caryocarididae.
It was assigned to Archaeostraca by Sepkoski (2002); and to Caryocarididae by Whittle et al. (2007) and Collette and Hagadorn (2010).
