Exochorhynchus rectus was named by Astaf'yeva-Urbaytis (1981). Its type specimen is AMMU 74-7, a valve, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rusavkino, which is in a Kasimovian marine horizon in the Russian Federation.
