Gorgonophontes was named by Schram (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-l Sepkoski's reference number: 352]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Gorgonophontidae.

It was assigned to Stomatopoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gorgonophontidae by Schram (2010).
