Squilla was named by Fabricius (1787) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 1262]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Squillidae, Squilloidea.

It was assigned to Stomatopoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Squillidae by Scott (1938), Schram (2010) and Haug et al. (2015).
