Astacus was named by Fabricius (1775) [Sepkoski's age data: J m R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Astacidae, Astacoidea.

It was reranked as Cancer (Astacus) by Montague (1808).

It was assigned to Agonata by Fabricius (1775); to Cancer by Montague (1808); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Astacidae by Rathbun (1926), Glaessner (1969), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Feldmann et al. (2016).
