Branchiocarcinus was named by Vega et al. (1995) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes]. It is not extant. Its type is Branchiocarcinus cornatus.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Carcineretidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
