Callinectes was named by Stimpson (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant. Its type is Callinectes sapidus.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Portunidae by Stimpson (1860) and Feldmann et al. (2003); and to Portuninae by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
