Caloxanthus was named by Milne-Edwards (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u T Dani Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Caloxanthus formosus.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Etyidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Feldmanniidae by Schweitzer et al. (2012).
