Carcinus was named by Leach (1814) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Carcinidae, Carcininae.
It was assigned to Platyonychidae by Dana (1851); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Carcinidae by Garassino et al. (2004); to Portunidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); and to Carcininae by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2002), Karasawa et al. (2008), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2021).
