Carpilius was named by Desmarest (1823) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 1259]. It is extant. Its type is Cancer maculatus. It is the type genus of Carpilioidea, Carpiliidae.
It was assigned to Xanthinae by Dana (1851); to Xanthidae by Rathbun (1918); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Carpiliidae by Karasawa (1993), Schweitzer et al. (2000), Schweitzer (2003), Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2015), Beschin et al. (2016), Beschin et al. (2016), Schweitzer et al. (2018) and Beschin et al. (2018).
