Clytiella was named by Glaessner (1931) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr u]. Its type is Clytiella spinifera.

It was assigned to Eryminae by Förster (1967); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Erymidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Clytiopsidae by Karasawa et al. (2013) and Feldmann et al. (2015).
