Clytiopsis was named by Bill (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-u]. Its type is Clytiopsis argentoratense. It is the type genus of Clytiopsinae, Clytiopsidae.
It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Erymidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); to Clytiopsinae by Förster (1967) and Klompmaker and Fraaije (2011); and to Clytiopsidae by Karasawa et al. (2013) and Feldmann et al. (2015).
