Coenobita was named by Latreille (1829) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Coenobitidae.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Coenobitidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Diogenidae by Luque et al. (2017).
