Coleia was named by Broderip (1835) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine-l K l]. Its type is Coleia antiqua. It is the type genus of Coleiidae.
It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Coleiidae by Garassino and Gironi (2006), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Feldmann et al. (2013).
