Felis planiceps was named by Vigors and Horsfield (1827). It is extant.
It was recombined as Plethaelurus planiceps by Cope (1882); it was recombined as Ailurin planiceps by Lyon (1908) and Miller (1942); it was recombined as Prionailurus planiceps by Johnson et al. (2006) and Breitenmoser and Breitenmoser (2017).
