Dromia was named by Weber (1795) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Dromiidae, Dromioidea, Dromiinae.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Dromiinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Dromiidae by Rathbun (1935), Müller (1984), Schweitzer et al. (2012) and Beschin et al. (2018).
