Eocarcinus was named by Withers (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Eocarcinus praecursor.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Eocarcinidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
