Eocarpilius was named by Blow and Manning (1996) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1259]. Its type is Eocarpilius carolinensis.
It was assigned to Xanthidae by Blow and Manning (1996) and Feldmann et al. (1998); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Carpiliidae by Schweitzer (2003), Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006), Fraaije et al. (2007), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2016) and Schweitzer et al. (2018).
