Cancer (Cancer) chaneyi was named by Nations (1975). Its type specimen is LACMIP 4436, a claw, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LACMIP 130-7, Timms Point, San Pedro, which is in a Pleistocene marine horizon in the Timms Point Silt Formation of California.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2000); it was recombined as Cancer chaneyi by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
