Taxonomy
Cancer (Metacarcinus) garthi was named by Nations (1975). Its type specimen is UCMP 10743, a claw, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCMP B-7880, Scotia Bluffs, which is in a Calabrian coastal sandstone in the Scotia Bluffs Sandstone Formation of California.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2000); it was recombined as Cancer garthi by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
