Taxonomy
Cancer (Metacarcinus) marri was named by Nations (1975). Its type specimen is UCMP 10739, a claw, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCMP D-3402, Opal Cliffs, which is in a Messinian coastal siltstone in the Purisima Formation of California.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2000); it was recombined as Cancer marri by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
