Galathea was named by Fabricius (1793) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u R]. It is extant. Its type is Cancer strigosus. It is the type genus of Galatheidae, Galatheoidea, Galatheinae.
It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Galatheinae by Müller (1984), Bishop (1985), Collins and Wienberg Rasmussen (1992) and van Bakel et al. (2003); and to Galatheidae by Muller and Collins (1991), Feldmann and Keys (1992), Karasawa (1993), De Angeli and Beschin (2008), Schweitzer et al. (2010), De Angeli et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2016), De Angeli and Ceccon (2017), Beschin et al. (2018) and Klompmaker et al. (2022).
