Gemmellarocarcinus was named by Checchia-Rispoli (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m]. It is not extant. Its type is Gemmellarocarcinus loerenthey.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Dynomenidae by Glaessner (1969), Muller and Collins (1991), Schweitzer et al. (2003), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Ceccon (2011); and to Dromiacea by Schweitzer et al. (2012) and Beschin et al. (2018).
