Glyphithyreus was named by Macleay (1838) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Eo-u]. It is not extant. Its type is Glyphithyreus formosus.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Eucratopsinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
