Pleolobites erinaceus was named by Remy (1960). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Falaises de Fresco, region JK (Laga-Ghirobo), bed 5, which is in a Ypresian marine sandstone in the Falaises de Fresco Formation of Cote D'Ivoire. It is the type species of Pleolobites.
