Harpactoxanthopsis was named by Via (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m T Eo-u]. Its type is Cancer quadrilobatus.
It was assigned to Xanthidae by Quayle and Collins (1981), Beschin et al. (1994) and Beschin et al. (1998); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Zanthopsidae by Schweitzer (2003), Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006), Beschin et al. (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2012) and Schweitzer et al. (2018).
