Hepatiscus was named by Bittner (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l T Eo-u]. Its type is Hepatiscus neumayri.
It was assigned to Calappidae by Beschin et al. (1994); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aethridae by Beschin et al. (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2012), Beschin et al. (2016), Beschin and De Angeli (2017) and Schweitzer and Feldmann (2019).
