Taxonomy
Sauripterus was named by Hall (1843). It is not extant. Its type is Sauripterus taylori.

It was corrected as Sauripteris by Johanson and Ahlberg (2001).

It was assigned to Rhizodontida by Hall (1843); to Megalichthyidae by Hay (1902); to Rhizodontidae by Woodward (1891) and Johanson and Ahlberg (2001); and to Sauripteridae by Davis et al. (2004).
