Inachus was named by Weber (1795) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Inachidae.

It was assigned to Inachinae by Ortmann (1893); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Inachidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2018) and Schweitzer et al. (2020).
