Lecythocaris was named by Von Meyer (1858) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Lecythocaris paradoxa.

It was assigned to Lecythocaridae by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2008) and Schweitzer et al. (2010).
