Leptomithrax was named by Miers (1876) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 922]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Majidae by Glaessner (1960), Feldmann and Keys (1992) and Feldmann et al. (2006); and to Majinae by Feldmann and Maxwell (1990), Feldmann and Duncan (1992), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2020).
