Libinia was named by Leach (1815) [Sepkoski's age data: Q Plei R]. It is extant. Its type is Libinia emarginata.

It was assigned to Majidae by Rathbun (1926); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pisinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017) and Schweitzer et al. (2020).
