Lobonotus was named by Milne-Edwards (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1220]. Its type is Lobonotus sculptus.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Pilumnidae by Schweitzer et al. (2004); and to Tumidocarcinidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
