Xanthopsis errans was named by Woods (1922). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Negritos, which is in an Eocene shallow subtidal shale/sandstone in the Negritos Formation of Peru.
It was recombined as Zanthopsis errans by Rathbun (1935) and Schweitzer et al. (2010).
