Maja was named by Lamarck (1801) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R]. It is extant. Its type is Cancer squinado. It is the type genus of Majoidea, Majidae, Majinae.
It was assigned to Crustacea by Lamarck (1818); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Majinae by Müller (1984), van Bakel et al. (2003), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2020).
