Menippe was named by De Haan (1833) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Menippidae.
It was assigned to Xanthinae by Dana (1851); to Xanthidae by Rathbun (1935), Glaessner (1960) and Feldmann and Keys (1992); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Menippinae by Schweitzer (2005) and Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); to Oziidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Menippidae by Schweitzer et al. (2020).
