Liomera was named by Dana (1851). It is extant. It is the type genus of Liomerinae.
It was assigned to Xanthinae by Dana (1851); to Xanthidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); and to Liomerinae by Karasawa (1993), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2021).
